Drive inland along the mountain slopes through macadamia nut orchards, past coffee farms, and to historic sites, including Wood Valley Temple, a Buddhist retreat that is

Further west is the village of Na`alehu, with restaurants, gallery, the famous Punaluu Bake Shop visitor center, a theater and stores.

Heading south is Kalae, the southernmost place in the United States. The 12-mile road from Highway 11 heads makai (towards the sea) through ranches, past a windmill farm and a Hawaiian village, to dramatic sea cliffs and a small beach. This is where Polynesians first landed by canoe in Hawaii.

Plantation House

Traveling back to Pahala drive inland along a half mile of 55-foot tall Norfolk pines lining each side of Maile Street. This is the old part of Pahala with remnants of a thriving sugar plantation town that in recent years has turned towards macadamia and coffee production. The old Pahala Theatre,
old bank, community club house
and plantation manager's home are surrounded by giant banyan,
floral and fruit trees.

If you continue through Pahala, you can head up to Wood Valley, a lush tropical area with ginger lining the narrow road. Here are fruit and vegetable, horse and goat farms, and the Wood Valley Buddhist temple, beneath towering mountain cliffs.

Back at the cottage, kick back in a swing suspended from a giant tree, a great place to read in the shade. Watch the life of this traditional Hawaiian agricultural town pass by.

Enjoy the Hawaiiana library of books and journals or choose from a CD from the Hawaiian music library.
